Awaab’s Law has come into effect

Awaab’s Law is officially in force - a new legal duty requiring social housing providers, including councils, to investigate and fix serious hazards such as damp and mould within strict timeframes.

Awaab’s Law was created after the death of a two-year-old boy Awaab Ishak, from Rochdale, who died because of severe damp and mould in his home. The new law is designed to ensure no family has to live in unsafe or unhealthy housing conditions.

What does it mean for you?

This means that if you report damp, mould, or other emergency hazards in your council home, we have a legal obligation to take swift action - assessing and addressing these risks within a set number of days. We’re committed to ensuring all homes are safe, secure, and suitable for healthy living.

If you need to report damp and mould or any other emergency housing hazard, please use our online portal to log your issue quickly and easily. Please note, repairs cannot be reported on the council’s social media.
