Burials, memorials and cemeteries

Coronavirus

Our Cemeteries are still open. Rippleside, Eastbrookend and Chadwell Heath cemeteries are open from 8.30am to 7pm daily.

Funeral guidelines for all funerals at Barking and Dagenham cemeteries

The high number of deaths, coupled with the ongoing risk of infection during the pandemic, has changed the way that funerals can be carried out.

Please adhere to the following guidance when visiting or attending one of our burial sites:

  • you must restrict the number of mourners who attend so that a safe distance of at least 2 metres (3 steps) can be maintained between individuals
  • only members of the person’s household and/or immediate family members should attend
  • the current guidance is a limit of 10 attendees at a funeral
  • if the deceased has neither household or family members in attendance, up to 10 friends can attend
  • mourners should follow the advice on social distancing when travelling to and from the funeral gathering
  • mourners should avoid any direct face-to-face or physical contact, for example, hugging each other unless they are part of the same household, that is, they have already been living in the same house as each other
  • mourners who are unwell with symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), or are part of a household with possible coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, should not attend any gatherings
  • mourners who are symptomatic should not attend in any circumstance

UK Government guidance does not currently suggest limits to the number of mourners that can attend funerals but a maximum of 10 mourners is currently accepted across the industry. Relatives are advised to consult with their funeral director, faith and/or community leader for further guidance on how the funeral should be conducted.

To ensure all organisations managing funerals can cope with the increased number of deaths, it is important that people do not delay funerals. We understand how difficult this will be for the families and friends of lost loved ones, however the current guidance will be in place for the foreseeable future for public safety reasons.

Burials, memorials and cemeteries

We know how important it is to remember those who have died, and we can offer advice on a range of memorials, including trees and benches. To preserve the peace and tranquillity and maintain the high maintenance standard of the sites, no dogs are allowed in (except guide dogs). We are committed to providing a burial service that meets the social, ethical and environmental needs of the community.

We do not provide a cremation service; however each of our cemeteries has a memorial garden for cremated remains, where loved ones can be remembered with a memorial wedge or vase in a quiet and peaceful environment.
