Burials, memorials and cemeteries

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Our Cemeteries are still open. Rippleside, Eastbrookend and Chadwell Heath cemeteries are open from 8.30am to 4.30pm daily on both weekdays and weekends.

Funeral guidelines for all funerals at Barking and Dagenham cemeteries

To protect the high standard of burial services in the borough, coupled with the ongoing risk of infection during the pandemic, we have had to make some changes to the way that funerals can be carried out, to protect the health of family and friends attending the service.

Please adhere to the following guidance when visiting or attending one of our burial sites to keep everyone safe:

  • you must restrict the number of mourners who attend so that a safe distance of at least 2 metres (3 steps) can be maintained between individuals
  • the current guidance is a limit of 30 funeral attendees made up of close family and friends
  • mourners should follow the advice on social distancing when travelling to and from the funeral gathering
  • mourners should try to avoid any direct face-to-face or physical contact
  • mourners who have symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), or are part of a household with possible coronavirus infection, should not attend any gatherings

Chapel service have now been resumed but numbers are limited to preserve Social Distancing:

  • mourners must wear facemasks when entering the Chapel or any interior space
  • Chadwell Heath Chapel: amount of people inside is limited to 10 people at any one time
  • Rippleside Chapel: amount of people inside is limited to 20 people at any one time
  • Eastbrookend Chapel: amount of people inside is limited to 15 people at any time
  • to reduce the risk of transmission, seating has been adapted in Chapels, to ensure Social Distancing is observed
  • hands-free hand sanitiser stations are installed at all three Chapels

To ensure all organisations managing funerals can cope successfully with the increased number of deaths, it is important that people do not delay funerals. We understand how difficult this will be for the families and friends of lost loved ones, but the current guidance will be in place for the foreseeable future for public safety reasons.

Burials, memorials and cemeteries

We know how important it is to remember those who have died, and we can offer advice on a range of memorials, including trees and benches. To preserve the peace and tranquillity and maintain the high maintenance standard of the sites, no dogs are allowed in (except guide dogs). We are committed to providing a burial service that meets the social, ethical and environmental needs of the community.

We do not provide a cremation service; however, each of our cemeteries has a memorial garden for cremated remains, where loved ones can be remembered with a memorial wedge or vase in a quiet and peaceful environment.
