Information about finding nurseries and childcare in the borough
Out of school clubs provide childcare before school and after school, also known as Wraparound childcare. This service operates during school term till 6pm or later. Wraparound childcare are settings providing breakfast club and after school club. Each provider offers different combinations of these services.
From September 2024, there has been an increase in the number of wraparound childcare places available across the country.
Wraparound childcare meets the needs of primary aged children from 4 to 11 years, whose parents/carers work, study, or training for employment. Clubs are usual based on school sites but there are a number of individual clubs which are not and are linked to specific schools around the borough. These clubs are based off school site and are responsible for escorting children to and from school (as appropriate) to the club nearby. Parents and carers can speak to their child’s school or contact the Family Information service for further details.
Wraparound childcare is before and after school care that wraps around the school day. It typically runs from 8 am until 6 pm (hours can change depending on local demand) during term time, either on a school site, or another local setting such as a community centre, a nursery, or with a childminder.
The Family Information Service (FIS) is a dedicated team within Barking and Dagenham council. The team provide free, confidential, impartial advice and guidance on all aspects of childcare.
