South Asian Heritage Month

South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM), celebrated annually from 18 July to 17 August, is a time to honour, explore, and celebrate the rich cultural heritage, histories, and contributions of South Asian communities in the UK.

South Asian Heritage Month recognises the deep connections between the UK and the eight countries that make up South Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

2025 Theme

This year’s theme, “Roots to Routes”, invites us to reflect on the journeys—both ancestral and personal—that shape our identities today. It’s about celebrating the stories of migration, resilience, and community, and how these experiences continue to influence generations through culture, tradition, and connection.

Events

In London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD), we are proud to mark SAHM 2025 with a variety of events taking place across the borough. These events aim to bring communities together, showcase local talent, and highlight the vibrant South Asian heritage that enriches our borough.
