Rent arrears

If your rent is not paid, the money owed is called 'rent arrears’.

You must pay all outstanding rent immediately if you have the means to do so to stop you being at risk of losing your home.

If you don’t pay you will first receive a letter to request you pay the outstanding amount.  If you still do not pay or reach out for help, further action will be taken such as court proceedings and eviction

If you are evicted due to rent arrears, you may be found to have made yourself intentionally homeless and the council will have no legal obligation to re-house you.
