Preventing condensation

Some simple first steps you can take to prevent condensation are to dry your windows, windowsills and any other surfaces in your home every morning if you see that they are wet.

The bigger things you can do are:

  • don't hang your washing over the radiators to dry. If possible, hang your washing outside to dry or hang it in the bathroom with the door closed and an extractor fan on or a window slightly open
  • use an extractor fan in your bathroom and keep the door closed when showering and an extractor fan in your kitchen and keep the door closed when you are cooking or washing up in the sink
  • when filling your bath, run the cold water first then add the hot - it will reduce the steam by 90% which leads to condensation
  • always cook with pan lids on, and turn the heat down once the water has boiled
  • sleep with a window slightly open in your bedroom or open one or two windows in your home, first thing in the morning, for ventilation
  • keep the doors within your home open to allow for ventilation
  • don't tightly pack clothes or items in your wardrobes, drawers or cupboards - try to leave space around them for air to flow through
  • leave a gap between furniture and walls and if possible, place them against internal walls
  • leave a gap between furniture and the floor by placing them on blocks
  • insulate your home to make the surfaces within it warmer
