New subscriptions for Green Garden Waste service now open

Residents can now sign up for Barking and Dagenham Council’s Green Garden Waste service as the service opens again for new subscribers from Monday, 18 May.

The fortnightly service offers residents an environmentally friendly way to dispose of garden waste such as flowers and grass cuttings, weeds, leaves, and hedge trimmings.

The council is already providing the service to 5,400 existing subscribers and is now extending it to everyone else.

Last year 7,500 residents signed up to the Green Garden Waste service, which shows how valued it is, and I’m really pleased to announce that we are again offering the service for new subscribers.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Public Realm, said: “In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we made the difficult decision to temporarily pause new subscriptions for the green garden waste service, to concentrate on household rubbish, which is our number one priority.

“Last year 7,500 residents signed up to the Green Garden Waste service, which shows how valued it is, and I’m really pleased to announce that we are again offering the service for new subscribers. We know that lots of residents have been busy in their gardens during the lockdown and that they’re looking forward to signing up.

“As we start extending the service to even more residents at this difficult time, we know we can rely on everyone’s support and patience.”

The Green Garden Waste service, which costs £40 per year, provides collections until December.

Launched in 2017, it has proved a key part of the council’s effort to meet the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s target of having a 50 per cent recycling rate by 2030.
