Two people who were recently featured in Barking and Dagenham Council’s Wall of Shame CCTV Appeal series have been identified and fined £400.

The culprits were fined following a confidential tip-off from a member of the public and a further council investigation.

The Wall of Shame helps to catch people committing ‘grime crimes’ on the borough’s streets and continues to be a success – amassing a total of 260,000 views since it started in August 2018, as well as leading to the identification and fining of several of the borough’s fly-tippers.

After the launch of the show’s 45th episode last week, a member of the public came forward by emailing grimecrime@lbbd.gov.uk to name the suspected culprits.

The videos highlight some of the borough’s fly-tipping hotspots, and captures some of its most shocking fly-tips on camera, including mattresses, cookers and washing machines. It has even featured a man fly-tipping a piano.

The series encourages residents to help identify the culprits caught on camera, who can then be investigated by the council’s enforcement team.

Last year, the council received over £40,000 in revenue from FPNs (Fixed Penalty Notices), however, the cost of fly-tipping to the council is far greater. Last year, the council spent £226,000 clearing fly-tipped waste.

Fly tipping is a real blight on the neighbourhoods affected, and we will continue to do what we can to tackle it.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said: “It’s really good to see the Wall of Shame doing its job and helping to identify these selfish people who think it’s okay to dump rubbish on our streets. Fly tipping is a real blight on the neighbourhoods affected, and we will continue to do what we can to tackle it.

“There is no excuse. Bulky waste collections are available, and our partners at AO.com will freely collect your white goods, and the tips are open to all residents.”

As well as the video appeals, the council carries out targeted leaflet drops in areas where footage suggests the offenders may live close by.
