Getting the most out of going green this year

Council urges residents to take full advantage of Green Garden Waste Service

Don’t run out of time this year to get greener! Residents only have until 14 February to sign up to be eligible for all 19 scheduled collections for Barking and Dagenham Council’s Green Garden Waste scheme.

Over 3,400 residents have already signed up since 15 December 2020 to the fortnightly service. Costing only £40 per year, it offers residents an eco-friendly way to dispose of garden waste such as flowers and grass cuttings, weeds, leaves, and hedge trimmings.

Green Garden Waste subscribers will benefit from collections between March and December, but residents must sign up before Sunday, 14 February to benefit from all pickups.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Public Realm, said:

“With Valentine’s Day drawing near, it makes it easy for residents to remember the cut-off date to sign up for all 2021 collections. If your loved one enjoys gardening, why not celebrate this special day by gifting them a Green Garden Waste subscription, which will be really useful for the rest of the year?

“We can all do our bit to minimise our impact on the environment, including recycling our garden waste with this service. Spring is an ideal time to enjoy our gardens now we are all at home more due to the pandemic, and we want to see everyone enjoy its full benefit.

“That’s why I urge as many of our residents as possible to sign up by 14 February. You’ll get the full benefits of getting your garden waste recycled – and help make our borough greener in time for spring.”

The Green Garden Waste service has proved a key part of the council’s effort to meet the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s target of having a 50 per cent recycling rate by 2030.

The scheme launched in 2017 and last year around 7,000 residents signed-up. For more information and to sign-up to the Green Garden Waste scheme, please visit: https://www.lbbd.gov.uk/green-garden-waste-collections
