Resident tip off results in fly-tipping fine

A Barking and Dagenham resident and a council enforcement officer recently joined forces to issue a £400 for fly tipping.

Last Thursday (10.02.22), a resident reported a fly tip, located at a bus stop where Green Lane meets Walnut Tree Road via the ‘Report it’ function on the council’s website.

The dumped rubbish included a light fitting, paintings, an airer plus other homeware items.

The report was quickly picked up by a council enforcement officer who went down there and inspected the fly-tip. During the inspection he found an address, which he visited and conducted a doorstep interview.

After a long discussion, the person at the address admitted to the fly tip and was issued with a £400 fine. The fly-tip was also cleared on the same day.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “Sadly it is the case that most fly-tips are similar to this case, people who live or work in the borough not disposing of rubbish at the tip or through a reputable collection service. We take fly-tipping very seriously in Barking and Dagenham and this shows that if incidents are reported to us, we will take action.

“I would like to say thank you to the resident and our council officers for acting so quickly to get this sorted.”

Barking and Dagenham Council has recently launched the latest phase of its Cleaner and Greener Barking and Dagenham campaign and is asking residents to do their bit by following six simple steps to help keep the borough at its best:

  1. putting the right rubbish in the right bin
  2. recycling more at home
  3. getting rid of bulky waste responsibly
  4. keeping gardens clean and tidy
  5. reporting fly-tipping and neighbourhood issues
  6. going one step further – by getting stuck in at community litter-picking events or carrying out their own litter picks.

The council has also recently launched a new Wall of Fame webpage – a cleaner, more celebratory version of its grime-hunting Wall of Shame video series – to celebrate the many community champions who are helping to tidy up Barking and Dagenham.
