Six simple steps for a Cleaner Greener Barking and Dagenham

Barking and Dagenham Council is calling on residents to do their bit to help create a cleaner and greener borough.

Earlier this month, the council launched the next phase of its Cleaner, Greener Barking and Dagenham campaign. This follows a drive to improve bin collections, increasing the amount of household waste that can be recycled, and investing in 18 brand-new bin trucks and lots of new street cleaning vehicles and equipment to help tidy up streets across the borough.

The council is now asking residents to do their bit by following six simple steps to help keep our borough at its best:

  1. putting the right rubbish in the right bin
  2. recycling more at home
  3. getting rid of bulky waste responsibly
  4. keeping gardens clean and tidy
  5. reporting fly-tipping and neighbourhood issues
  6. going one step further – by getting stuck in at community litter-picking events or carrying out their own litter picks.

Please do continue to support our Waste and Street Cleaning Teams if you see them out and about in the borough, giving them a thumbs up or a friendly wave really does go far to help keep them going.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Public Ream, said: “Over the last few years we’ve worked really hard to improve our Waste and Street Cleaning Services and I’d like to thank our hard-working teams for all their dedication, and particularly throughout the pandemic as we continued to provide all our waste collection services despite huge pressures.

“We’ve worked hard to improve and that’s why we now deliver a 99 per cent collection rate on bins and we’ve increased our recycling rate by more than 10 per cent. Please do continue to support our Waste and Street Cleaning Teams if you see them out and about in the borough, giving them a thumbs up or a friendly wave really does go far to help keep them going.”

It’s really important that we all take pride in our neighbourhoods, and it’s only by everyone coming together that we’ll be able to create a cleaner and greener borough for everyone to enjoy.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Darren Rodwell, said: “It’s really important that we all take pride in our neighbourhoods, and it’s only by everyone coming together that we’ll be able to create a cleaner and greener borough for everyone to enjoy.

“So, we’re asking residents to carry out six simple steps - it’s all really easy stuff like putting the right stuff in each bin, getting rid of your bulky waste properly and recycling more at home. We’re asking you to keep your front garden clean and tidy and if you see things like fly-tipping, please report it to us.

“Of course, if you want to go one step further, you can join some of our fantastic local groups who litter pick across the borough or carry out your own litter pick on your street – it’s a great way to get some exercise while doing your bit to help keep Barking and Dagenham at its best.”

Residents can find out more about community litter picking events or can carry out their own local litter picking events, borrowing everything that’s needed from the council, including litter-pickers, gloves and bags. A collection point for all the rubbish can also be arranged to make the task easier.

The council has also recently launched a new Wall of Fame webpage – a cleaner, more celebratory version of its grime-hunting Wall of Shame video series – to celebrate the many community champions who are helping to tidy up Barking and Dagenham.

If residents know of any clean-up volunteers that should also be featured on the Wall of Fame, they can let the council know by emailing socialmedia@lbbd.gov.uk.
