Award winners holding up awards

Almost 600 young people awarded Colin Pond Scholarship Awards!

Barking and Dagenham’s highest-performing GCSE pupils (excluding the pandemic years) who are continuing to study in borough have been recognised at this year’s Colin Pond Scholarship Awards, held at Jo Richardson School. Each student received a £300 grant to support their A-Level studies, continuing a proud tradition of investing in local talent and celebrating their success!

Families joined young awardees for a night of celebration, as teachers honoured their students’ achievements. Awards were proudly presented by Councillor Kangethe, Councillor Jones, the Borough’s Young Mayor Raspreet Sigh, the Mayor of Barking and Dagenham Cllr Princess Bright, and distinguished Colin Pond alumni, such as former Robert Clack School pupil and Oxbridge graduate Xhesika Leka.

Attendees were also able to enjoy an amazing dance performance by Barking Abbey School. Colin Pond, a councillor from 1998 to 2001, left a trust fund to help young people in Barking and Dagenham pursue further education.

His legacy continues to make a real difference. Now in its ninth year, the awards celebrate young people who have chosen to stay in the borough for their post-16 education. This year, 62 students from 13 local schools were honoured, bringing the total number of awards since 2017 to almost 600.

GCSE results in 2025 were the best in Barking and Dagenham’s history, with Attainment 8 scores rising by 1.5%, and grades 9 to 4 in English and Maths increasing by 2%. The proportion of students achieving top grades (9 to 7) in English reached its highest ever level.

At A-Level, over three-quarters of grades were A–C*, with many students securing places at Russell Group universities and international scholarships. With 98% of schools rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted and first-choice admissions at 96.25% for primary and 87.6% for secondary, Barking and Dagenham is investing to sustain its record-breaking GCSE and A-Level results and inclusive education model.

Councillor Elizabeth Kangethe, Cabinet Member for Educational Attainment and School Improvement said:

"It was amazing to attend the Colin Pond Scholarship Awards and see families, parents, and students enjoying such a special evening. The atmosphere was full of pride and celebration, and these awards are a fantastic way to recognise the hard work of our young people. The Colin Pond Scholarships are an incredible legacy that continues to support and inspire the next generation in Barking and Dagenham."
