Anti-Bullying Week 2025 | B&D youngsters come together to create an incredible music video

As part of Anti-Bullying Week 2025, Barking & Dagenham is shining a spotlight on Better Person, a powerful song written and performed by local young people to confront bullying and promote empathy.

Although the track was officially released in October, its roots go back to a creative consultation commissioned by Barking & Dagenham Council earlier this year. The consultation began with anti-bullying workshops in spring 2024, where young people shared personal stories and reflections. While a podcast was initially proposed, participants felt it lacked emotional impact. One young person remarked: “A podcast? That’s so old school.”

The turning point came during a live music event at Boathouse Studios in Barking, featuring Manny Loveankh and True Cadence. Inspired by the performance, the group decided to express their experiences through songwriting. “I want to sing a song about bullying; that’s much more hard-hitting,” said one participant.

With support from True Cadence, the group completed a 10-week songwriting course, recorded two original tracks at Pirate Studios in Hackney, and filmed a music video for Better Person.

This project highlights the power of creative consultation and youth-led storytelling. It’s a model for future engagement where young people lead, and creativity drives change.
