Barking and Dagenham Council proudly recognised two outstanding contributions to the borough’s civic and cultural life at a special awards ceremony held at Barking Town Hall on Tuesday 11 November.
The Dagenham Girl Pipers were centre stage as they received the prestigious Freedom of the Borough award. For generations, this iconic group has empowered local women through music, discipline, and camaraderie, while proudly representing Barking and Dagenham on both national and international platforms. Their legacy continues to inspire young people and stands as a testament to the borough’s rich cultural heritage and commitment to female empowerment.
Also honoured was Jeanne Alexander, who was formally awarded the title of Honorary Alderwoman in recognition of her exceptional dedication to public service. As a former council member, Jeanne played a pivotal role in championing education, youth engagement, and community development across the borough. Her tireless efforts have left a lasting imprint on countless lives and helped shape a more inclusive and supportive local environment.
Councillor Dominic Twomey, Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, said: "The Dagenham Girl Pipers have been a beacon of real pride for our borough and leave behind not just a local but an international legacy. It was a real honour to celebrate their long history and connection to the borough with them. Congratulations also to Jeanne Alexander, whose 28 years service as a councillor have been recognised. Their contributions remind us what it means to serve with heart and lead with pride."
