Four drivers have been convicted after being caught illegally using Blue Badges by Barking and Dagenham Council Civil Enforcement Officers.
Blue Badges help people with mobility difficulties park closer to their destination. Misusing them takes away spaces from those who genuinely need them.
The council has a zero-tolerance approach to people illegally using Blue Badges and will take strong action against anyone caught doing so.
Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “Blue Badges are designed to support residents with disability or health issues. It’s unacceptable that some people exploit this system for personal gain.
“We don’t stand for this in Barking and Dagenham and will continue to work hard to tackle the issue.”
The following individuals were found guilty at Barkingside Magistrates Court on either Tuesday 7 October or Tuesday 4 November:
- Shaheen Perwaiz Mukhtar – prosecuted on the fraudulent use of a forged disabled badge. £384 fine, costs of £300 and a victim surcharge of £154, totalling £838
- Sadiya Abukar – prosecuted for using a replaced, lost disabled badge. £440 fine, costs of £528 and a victim surcharge of £176, totalling £1,144.
- Imran Jawed – prosecuted for using a forgery of a disabled badge. £640, costs of £250 and a victim surcharge of £256, totalling £1,146.
- Deborah Adeola Olamide Agboola – prosecuted for using a forgery of a disabled badge. £120 fine, costs of £200 and a victim surcharge of £48, totalling £368.
Each month, the council’s Civic Enforcement Officers carry out around 100 checks a month on Blue Badges and seize about 14 a month. This helps ensure disabled parking spaces remain available for those who need them most.
If residents are aware of someone using a Blue Badge illegally, they can report it to the council by emailing ParkingInvestigationTeam@lbbd.gov.uk.
