Barking and Dagenham council alongside community partners has officially unveiled its Black History Month 2025 programme. Running throughout October, this year’s theme “Standing Firm in Power and Pride” a bold tribute to the strength, resilience, and cultural richness of Black African and Caribbean communities.
The newly announced programme offers something for everyone, with a vibrant mix of wellness experiences, creative workshops, exhibitions, poetry, film, and community celebrations. Whether you're looking to reflect, learn, or simply celebrate, there are opportunities for residents of all ages to get involved and connect with the stories, achievements, and heritage that continue to shape Barking and Dagenham and beyond.
This year’s theme focuses on two powerful values:
- Power, recognising the leadership and influence of Black individuals who have driven change across civil rights, politics, education, and the arts.
- Pride, celebrating cultural identity, heritage, and the enduring legacy of Black excellence.
A key moment in the month will be the unveiling of new inductees into the Black History Month Hall of Fame, honouring individuals of African and Caribbean heritage with strong ties to Barking and Dagenham who have made outstanding contributions across sport, arts, volunteering, and community action. The announcement will take place on Tuesday 1 October, marking a proud milestone for the borough.
Councillor Sade Bright, Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills & Aspiration, expressed the importance of the month:
“Black History Month is a time to reflect, to learn, and to celebrate. It’s about recognising the incredible contributions of Black communities, not just nationally, but right here in Barking and Dagenham. This year’s theme, ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’, speaks to the strength and beauty of Black heritage. I’m proud that our programme offers something for everyone, and I encourage all residents to take part, be inspired, and help us honour the legacy and future of Black excellence.”
