Barking and Dagenham’s Valence House receives prestigious national accreditation from Arts Council England for 30th year

Valence House has been awarded Full Accreditation status by Arts Council England on behalf of the UK Accreditation Partnership - a mark of national excellence in museum management, care, and public engagement.

Accreditation began as the Museum Registration Scheme in 1988, initially with an emphasis on ethical governance and collections management. When it achieved its registered status in 1995, Valence House Museum was the 110th museum in the country to receive the award. It is a mark of distinction that the museum has held without break for 30 years.

As the only surviving manor house in Dagenham, Valence House’s galleries tell the story of Barking and Dagenham and its people throughout the ages. The renewed award recognises Valence House Museum as meeting rigorous standards set by the Arts Council for collections care, governance, and community access.

Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this important recognition for the 30th year. It’s a testament to the outstanding work of our dedicated staff, volunteers and supporters who continue to preserve the borough’s history and make it accessible for everyone.”

Visitors can look forward to a brand-new exhibition coming to Valence House 26 July – 27 September, shining the light on Barking Abbey’s archaeology following an examination of recent discoveries.

Valence House is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am – 4pm.
