Barking and Dagenham’s warm spaces open to support residents this winter

Barking and Dagenham Council announces warm spaces for residents this winter in collaboration with local partners.

This year local groups bid for up to £15,000 to host a warm space from a pot of £126,000 funded by the Government’s Household Support Fund. Nine partners were successful in their bids; Al Madina Mosque, The Source, Church at Barking Riverside, Community Resources for Change, DABD, Ekota Academy, Harmony House, Humourisk and Kingsley Hall.

Warm spaces are relaxed local places where anyone is welcome to spend the day, keep warm and enjoy a hot drink while connecting with others. Locations also offer social activities designed to help residents stay connected during the colder months including arts and crafts, knitting and crochet, toddler zones and board games. Computers and wifi access, snacks and refreshments are also available.

Councillor Dominic Twomey, Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, said: “No one should face a choice between heating and eating, yet we know some of our residents will face that dilemma this winter. That’s why the council is working with community partners to provide warm spaces around the borough. These are places where people can not only keep warm, but also feel supported, welcomed, and part of a community that looks out for one other.”

Councillor Saima Ashraf, Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, added: “We’re proud to work with community partners to make sure these spaces are accessible to everyone, especially those who may be feeling isolated or struggling this winter. This collective effort emphasises our shared commitment to caring for the local community and ensuring no one has to face difficult times alone.”
