New £150k Reformer studio launches at Abbey Leisure Centre

A brand-new Reformer studio has opened at Abbey Leisure Centre in Barking – and residents are being invited to try it for free for the next two weeks.

The impressive £150k investment has seen one of the centre’s former group exercise studios transformed into a dedicated space for Reformer - a growing fitness trend that focuses on core strength, flexibility and full-body conditioning.

The facility was officially opened on Friday 30 May at a ribbon-cutting event attended by Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council and representatives from Everyone Active, which manages Abbey Leisure Centre in partnership with the council.

Reformer is performed on a specialist machine featuring a moving platform and adjustable resistance, offering a low-impact workout that can be tailored to suit all abilities – from complete beginners to seasoned gym-goers.

The studio will host two types of classes - Reformer FitCore, which focuses on full-body strengthening through Pilates-based movements and is aimed at beginners and those looking for a gentler introduction to the equipment, and Reformer Ignite, a more intense, fast-paced session designed for people seeking a tougher workout.

Hasan Romel, Everyone Active’s Area Contract Manager, said: “We’re thrilled to bring Reformer to Abbey Leisure Centre. This dedicated studio allows us to offer something completely new for our members and the wider community.

“Whether you’re starting your fitness journey, recovering from injury, or looking for a new challenge, Reformer is suitable for everyone. We’d love people to come along and try it for free over the next two weeks – we’re confident they’ll be hooked.

“Abbey Leisure Centre is now the fourth site in Everyone Active’s portfolio to offer Reformer, as we gradually roll out these studios across the country. With more than 240 centres nationwide, this is a key part of our commitment to expanding innovative fitness options for our members."

Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, added: "It’s great to see Everyone Active expanding their offer and investing in facilities for the benefit of our residents. Reformer Pilates is becoming more and more popular and this is a fantastic opportunity for residents to get active – no matter where they are in their fitness journey!”
