A property in Barking has been issued with a Partial Closure Order after Barking and Dagenham Council and the Police responded to multiple reports of serious antisocial behaviour.
The council received repeated complaints that known drug users were attempting to break into a property on John Burns Drive, prompting the occupant to report the incidents to the Police.
In response, an officer from the council’s Antisocial Behaviour Team worked closely with the Police to build a case for court. On Friday 1 August, the court granted a Partial Closure Order, meaning only the tenant is permitted to enter the property. Anyone else found attempting to access the premises will face arrest.
Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said: “This action sends a clear message that antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated in our borough.
“We’re committed to working with our partners to protect residents and ensure our communities feel safe.”
Acting Chief Inspector Weeden said: “The team has been working in close partnership with the council, focused on safeguarding a vulnerable victim and preventing any further exploitation. This type of victimisation, known as cuckooing, can have a profound and lasting impact on those directly affected.
“The Order will now remain in effect for a further three months, during which enhanced patrols will be conducted to ensure the Order is fully enforced in partnership with the local authority.”
The council has also referred the tenant to various support agencies and discussed alternative housing options with them.
