Barking and Dagenham is set to become even greener as the final phase of a major tree planting initiative for this year is complete.
This week, over 12,000 native trees and shrubs were planted at Eastbrookend Country Park, led by the council’s Ranger Service team and with the help of council staff, councillors, local volunteers and community groups who all rolled up their sleeves to lend a hand.
The tree planting uses the Miyawaki method, a pioneering technique that creates dense, fast-growing forest ecosystems in urban spaces. The Miyawaki method establishes a forest up to 30 times more dense than conventional tree planting, grows ten times faster than regular forests, and is a chemical and fertiliser free forest that sustains itself once established, supporting local biodiversity.
This year alone, almost 45,000 trees have been planted, exceeding the original target of 36,000. Of which, 5,000 trees were planted in just one single day, setting a new borough record.
Councillor Dominic Twomey, Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, said: “We’ve invested millions to improve our green spaces, with seven parks proudly holding the prestigious Green Flag Award for excellence.
“Planting these trees will bring so many benefits to our local communities and I’m proud to see everyone coming together to plant them. It starts here, with all of us working together.
“Our borough is never short of community spirit - a huge thank you to our brilliant volunteers who give up their spare time day in, day out.”
Councillor Kashif Haroon, Cabinet Member for Public Realm and Climate Change added: “This is a vital part of ensuring our borough is resilient in the face of climate change.
“These trees will improve air quality, biodiversity by creating new habitats for local wildlife and help to reduce the risk of flooding.”
Over the past decade, Barking and Dagenham Council has planted more than 150,000 trees across its streets and parks, with more to come.
