Young B&D: Where do I go?

Barking and Dagenham have launched a powerful new youth video celebrating the borough as a place where young people’s stories matter and their voices are heard. Inspired by the question “Where do I go?”, the video shows that Barking and Dagenham has something for everyone.

Produced in collaboration with local young people and voluntary, community and faith organisations, the video showcases the creativity, resilience, and pride of Barking and Dagenham’s youth.

From workshops to on-set roles, young people were co-producers, shaping the narrative, featuring in the film, and learning media skills along the way. The project offers a snapshot of the amazing local offers, organisations and individuals supporting young people across the borough to access positive activities, safe spaces, and trusted adults and mentors.

The project was shaped by personal stories and lived experiences, most notably Rashid’s, who stars in the video. His story helped form the emotional core of the film, with the theme “Where do I go?” capturing young people’s search for belonging, aspiration, and safe spaces.

The music was developed through a songwriting and music development session with local young people aged 12–21, led by spoken word artist Jago Xyen in partnership with grassroots music organisation True Cadence. Together, they explored themes of identity, culture, barriers, and the power of creative expression.

The council and young people worked closely with Five Hound Dog Productions to bring the video to life. Along the journey, young people gained valuable hands-on experience in media and storytelling, shadowing professionals, contributing ideas, and learning about the production process from behind the scenes.

The project responds directly to feedback from over 300 young people, who called for better promotion of youth offers and safe spaces. With support from the Household Support Fund, the borough is committed to ensuring every young person, especially those facing financial hardship, can access opportunities and trusted adults.

The council would like to thank everyone who made this possible: Youth League UK, Ab Phab Youth Club, Future Youth Zone, Box Up Crime, Peer2Peer and Pat Project CiC, Jago Xyen, Five Hound Dog Productions and LBBD Youth Workers and staff.
