Young marketeers raise over £500 at Barking Market

Children from nine local schools brought their school-grown fruit and vegetables to Barking Market for a special event celebrating food education and community giving.

The event was the culmination of six months of hard work as part of the Young Marketeers programme, a food education initiative run by School Food Matters.

During the scheme students learned about food systems, sustainability, and the impact of food waste — all while cultivating their own produce in school gardens.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “This event was a fantastic example of how education, community, and sustainability can come together to empower young people. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by the students was truly inspiring.”

The children proudly sold their harvest to the public, creating a vibrant atmosphere and raising over £500. All proceeds will go towards tackling food insecurity through Plan Zheroes and supporting further food education initiatives.
