Barking and Dagenham Council marks Volunteers' Week with a special celebration event held on Tuesday 2 June, bringing together volunteers to thank those who dedicate their time to support the borough.
Over the past year, 364 active volunteers have contributed an incredible 20,500 hours of service in the borough, helping to strengthen communities, support vulnerable residents and improve local services throughout Barking and Dagenham.
Guests heard inspiring stories from volunteers Nur Alam and Afsana Hashmi, who spoke about their personal volunteering journeys and the positive impact volunteering has had on their lives and the lives of others.
A number of volunteers were also recognised with special ‘Star of the Year’ awards for their dedication and continued support. John Bangura, who was the recipient of the ‘Volunteer of the Year Award’, amassed a total 900 hours volunteering as a Digital Champion in the past year alone. He also lends a hand at the Barking Community Hub as a Library assistant.
Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Engagement, said: "Our volunteers are at the heart of so much that makes Barking and Dagenham a great place to live. Whether they are supporting local services, helping neighbours, improving community spaces or offering their time to those who need it most, their contribution is invaluable.
“Together, our 364 active volunteers have given more than 20,000 hours over the past year, demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to our borough. This celebration is a small way of saying thank you for the difference they make every single day, and I am delighted to recognise their achievements and dedication."
