Closure order issued

Action taken to tackle drug-related and ASB activity at two borough properties

Two properties linked to serious drug-related activity and anti-social behaviour in Barking and Dagenham have been closed following joint action by Barking and Dagenham Council and the Metropolitan Police.

Closure orders were secured for addresses on Harpour Road and Pembroke Gardens after extensive investigations identified persistent issues affecting local residents and the wider community.

At Harpour Road, police carried out a warrant following a lengthy investigation into drug use and dealing at the property. The tenant disclosed that they had been the victim of "cuckooing", a form of exploitation where criminals take over the home of a vulnerable person in order to carry out illegal activity. The resident is currently being supported in temporary accommodation while further investigations continue and arrangements are made for suitable long-term housing. Local residents who have been significantly impacted by the activity have assisted the investigation by providing statements.

At Pembroke Gardens, a sheltered housing property had been associated with persistent anti-social behaviour and drug-related concerns over an extended period. The resident is currently receiving medical treatment and will be supported through a care assessment process to identify accommodation more suited to their needs, working alongside Adult Social Care and partner agencies.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said: "These closure orders demonstrate our commitment to tackling crime, anti-social behaviour and the exploitation of vulnerable residents.

"Working closely with the police and our partner agencies, we will continue to take action against those who make our communities feel unsafe while ensuring vulnerable people receive the support they need."

Inspector Carroll Weeden said: "The Closure Order at Pembroke Gardens is an excellent result for local residents who have been affected by ongoing issues linked to this address. We have listened to community concerns and worked with our partners to secure a positive outcome.

“We remain committed to taking robust action against those who engage in criminality and anti-social behaviour, ensuring our neighbourhoods remain safe places to live, work and visit."

The council is encouraging residents to continue reporting concerns about drug activity, anti-social behaviour and exploitation so that action can be taken to protect individuals and communities.
