Barking achieves 100% success in compliance checks during High Lights Festival period

Local businesses in Barking have demonstrated strong commitment to protecting young people after achieving a 100% pass rate in recent compliance checks carried out during the High Lights Festival period.

Between the two High Lights event weekends in May, Trading Standards officers conducted underage test purchasing checks for alcohol sales at licensed premises surrounding Barking Park.

Fifteen premises were tested using young volunteers, with every business correctly refusing the sale.

This excellent result reflects the positive impact of ongoing engagement with local businesses, including encouraging traders to sign up to the Responsible Retailer Scheme (RRS). It also highlights the dedication of businesses in Barking to operating responsibly and complying with the law.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “This is a fantastic result and shows the strong sense of responsibility shared by businesses in Barking.

“We will continue working closely with local businesses to ensure high standards are maintained, particularly during busy periods and events, so Barking and Dagenham remains a safe place for everyone to live, work and visit.”

Businesses are reminded to remain vigilant when selling age-restricted products, including alcohol, vapes and cigarettes, and to continue carrying out robust age verification checks.

Support and advice are available for any businesses seeking guidance on staying compliant. Trading Standards can be contacted at: tradingstandards@lbbd.gov.uk. Residents concerned about the sale of age-restricted products to young people can report this to Trading Standards or the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on: 0808 223 1133.
