Barking and Dagenham Council celebrates inspirational women at 2026 Women’s Recognition Event

Barking and Dagenham Council proudly hosted its 2026 Women’s Recognition Event on Friday 13 March, honouring remarkable women whose dedication, compassion and leadership continue to strengthen communities across the borough.

Held in the Mayor’s Parlour at Barking Town Hall as part of the council’s Women’s Empowerment Month, the event brought together councillors, community partners and guests for an uplifting afternoon, recognising women who inspire positive change every day.

Councillor Sade Bright, Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills and Aspiration, said: “This year’s nominees and winners represent the very best of Barking and Dagenham. Their resilience, creativity and commitment to others help drive our borough forward, and today we proudly celebrated the impact each of them has made.

“Their stories embody the spirit of empowerment and remind us why it’s so important to continue championing gender equality. Many congratulations to all the incredible women who have been recognised for their outstanding work and dedication.”

A panel of councillors and community representatives selected winners across a series of categories, each highlighting a different area of contribution and leadership:

  • Community Impact: The Al Madina Female Funeral Team
  • Entrepreneur of the Year: Danielle Everitt
  • Educator of the Year: Sharleen “Red Fox” Ferrol Fulgence
  • Health and Wellbeing Champion of the Year: Nassaba Guiba Fernandes
  • Woman of Courage: Winnet Wadzanai Nyirenda
  • Jodie Chesney Young Community Champion of the Year: Rhiann Hunte
  • Anne Eastlea Lifetime Achievement: Dionne Corrodus Weekes
  • Community Project of the Year: Ansarun Ahmed

Woman of the Year 2026

A special highlight of the afternoon was the announcement of the Barking and Dagenham Woman of the Year 2026, awarded to Ansarun Ahmed in recognition of her extraordinary commitment to supporting and uplifting women across the borough. 

Through the Women’s Coffee Morning Programme at Leftley Sports Club, she has created an inclusive, trusted space that tackles social isolation, builds confidence and brings nearly 1,000 women together through wellbeing, skills and community activities. Her leadership has strengthened community connections and opened doors for women to thrive, making a lasting difference to countless lives.
