Barking and Dagenham council is urging residents and visitors to help protect local homes, parks and open spaces from fires as the borough prepares for an increased risk of extreme weather this summer.
With warmer weather expected in the coming months, the council is sharing early safety advice in partnership with the London Fire Brigade to help residents enjoy the sunshine responsibly.
London has seen a sharp rise in wildfires in recent years, highlighting the growing risk posed by hotter and drier conditions, and increased pressure on emergency and public services. Barking and Dagenham has experienced several significant grass and wildfire incidents, and more recently during a major wildfire in Dagenham in July 2025, pre‑prepared fire breaks installed by the council in collaboration with London Fire Brigade played a decisive role in preventing the fire from spreading to nearby homes.
With forecasts indicating an increased likelihood of short periods of intense heat this year, the council is taking early, preventative action to reduce risk to residents, infrastructure, and the borough’s natural environment.
Key messages include a reminder that BBQs are not permitted on balconies or in parks, as they pose a serious fire risk. Disposable barbecues in particular present a serious fire risk and have been linked to grass fires across London.
Residents are also being urged to dispose of rubbish safely, particularly cigarette butts and glass bottles, which can easily start fires in dry conditions.
The council is also highlighting the dangers of entering lakes and ponds during hot weather. While they may appear inviting, open water can be much colder than expected and may contain hidden hazards, making it difficult to get out safely.
Matt Clubb, Director of Public Realm, said: “While we all look forward to enjoying warmer weather, it’s important that we do so safely. Small actions like disposing of cigarette butts properly, not leaving rubbish behind, and avoiding BBQs on balconies or in parks, can make a big difference in preventing fires.
“We also want to remind residents that lakes and ponds can be dangerous, even on the hottest days. Staying out of the water and following safety advice helps protect you and those around you.
“We’re asking everyone to play their part to keep each other and our borough safe this summer.”
London Fire Brigade continues to strengthen its preparedness for extreme weather through investment in training, specialist equipment and operational capability. However, preventing incidents through early action remains essential.
London Fire Brigade Borough Commander for Barking and Dagenham, Narinder Dail, said: “We’re working closely with Barking and Dagenham Council to help reduce the risk of grass fires and keep local communities safe as we come up to the warmer months. We want everyone to enjoy the sunshine, but it’s vital people take the necessary precautions to help prevent grass fires from starting.
“We’re urging residents to take simple but important steps, including avoiding barbecues in parks or on balconies, disposing of cigarettes carefully, and making sure rubbish and glass bottles are not left behind in open spaces. Small actions can make a big difference in preventing fires."
