All 30 businesses tested in Barking have successfully passed underage test purchasing checks for vapes, demonstrating strong compliance and a shared commitment to protecting young people.
On Tuesday 7 April, Barking and Dagenham Council’s Trading Standards officers carried out a series of underage test purchasing compliance checks for vape sales at premises across Barking. A total of 30 businesses were tested using 14 and 15‑year‑old volunteers, with every premises correctly refusing the sale, resulting in a 100% pass rate.
This outcome reflects the positive impact of ongoing engagement with local traders, including encouraging businesses to sign up to the council’s Responsible Retailer Scheme (RRS), which supports businesses to sell age‑restricted products responsibly and lawfully.
Keith Stanger, Director of Enforcement, Regulatory Services and Community Safety said: “Achieving a 100% pass rate is an excellent result and shows just how seriously businesses take their responsibilities. By refusing illegal sales and carrying out effective age checks, traders are playing a vital role in protecting young people and supporting a safer borough.”
Businesses are reminded to remain vigilant when selling age‑restricted products such as vapes and cigarettes and to continue carrying out robust age‑verification checks, including requesting valid photographic ID where appropriate.
