East London Council celebrates Outstanding CQC rating for residential care home

Barking and Dagenham Council has welcomed the news that George Brooker House (GBH), a residential care home in Dagenham, has been awarded an Overall Outstanding rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following its April 2026 inspection.

The George Brooker Care Society Limited, which runs the home, provides accommodation, nursing, personal care and support to older people, including those living with dementia and physical disabilities. At the time of inspection, 42 residents were being supported at the service.

George Brooker House has been delivering high-quality care for more than 35 years, and this latest recognition highlights the organisation’s continued commitment to excellence. The CQC described the home as an extremely caring service, where residents’ privacy, independence, choice and dignity are not only promoted but consistently respected.

Inspectors noted that staff demonstrated exceptional kindness, patience and compassion, spending meaningful time with residents and building positive, respectful relationships. Feedback from residents and their families reinforced these findings, with many praising the high standard of care and the supportive, welcoming environment.

The inspection also highlighted a number of key strengths, including:

  • Highly detailed and personalised care plans developed with residents and their families, and regularly reviewed to remain relevant and up to date
  • A thoughtfully designed environment that supports accessibility and orientation, including dementia-friendly features
  • Well-trained staff who record and respond to incidents in real time using an effective electronic system
  • Strong leadership that is visible, supportive and focused on staff wellbeing
  • Safe staffing levels and robust recruitment, induction and ongoing training practices

As a local authority, Barking and Dagenham Council has a strong and positive relationship with George Brooker House, recognising its proactive and collaborative approach to partnership working and consistently high standards of care.

Councillor Maureen Worby, Cabinet Member for Housing, Adults Social Care and Health, said: “We are incredibly proud to see George Brooker House receive this well-deserved Outstanding rating from the CQC. This achievement reflects the dedication, compassion and professionalism of the entire team, who go above and beyond every day to support some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

“It is particularly significant given how few providers across North East London reach this standard. George Brooker House is a shining example of what excellent care looks like, and we are proud to have them in Barking and Dagenham. I would like to congratulate all staff on this fantastic result and thank them for their continued commitment to delivering outstanding care.”

Maggie Strong, Registered Manager of GBH said; “Achieving an Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission is a significant milestone for George Brooker House and recognises the consistent hard work and commitment of our team. We strive to create a safe, caring and inclusive environment where people can live meaningful and fulfilling lives, and we are incredibly proud that this has been recognised at the highest level. We are also grateful for the continued support and positive partnership we have with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, which helps us to deliver the very best outcomes for the people we support.”

This achievement is especially notable in the context of the wider North East London region, where only a small proportion of providers have been awarded an Outstanding rating.

Barking and Dagenham Council extends its sincere congratulations to everyone at George Brooker House for this exceptional accomplishment and for continuing to make the borough proud.
