A South Woodham Ferrers man has been ordered to pay more than £1,400 after failing to pay a fixed penalty notice for littering in Dagenham.
Mr Neil Glover, of Tighfield Walk was prosecuted after he was caught discarding a cigarette from his vehicle on Rainham Road South on 7 May 2025. The case was heard at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on 6 January 2026.
The offence occurred while officers were on patrol in slow-moving traffic on Rainham Road South, Dagenham. Mr Glover was observed smoking and flicking ash from his vehicle before discarding a cigarette onto the public highway.
Despite being issued a fixed penalty notice of £200, which would have discharged his liability, Mr Glover failed to pay and was subsequently prosecuted. He was fined £220, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £88, and £1,096.50 in costs, bringing the total to £1,404.50, payable within 28 days.
Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: "Littering is not a minor offence – it damages our environment and costs taxpayers money to clean up. This case sends a clear message that those who disregard the law and fail to take responsibility will face significant consequences."
Residents are reminded to dispose of waste responsibly and can report littering incidents via the council’s website www.lbbd.gov.uk/report-it.
