Council Leader gives backing to Mayor’s call for Afghan support

The Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, Cllr Darren Rodwell has lent his voice to the Mayor of London’s ‘London Refugee Response’ fund, which will be a way for more people to make donations to help refugees build a new life in London.

East London man sees red for assault on traffic warden

A local man who assaulted a council civil protection officer has had his just reward after he was given a 9-week custodial sentence suspended for 18 months.

The Barking and Dagenham resident (who cannot be named for legal reasons), assaulted a Civil Enforcement Officer who had issued them with a Fixed Penalty Notice for parking in a suspended bay in Goresbrook Road, Dagenham.

The incident took place on 22 November 2020. Following the assault, the police were called, and the officer was supported until their arrival.

School-Home Support Practitioner awarded top gong for work with families at East London school

Katy-Anne Waite has been crowned Practitioner of the Year by the School-Home Support charity for her work with families at Mayesbrook Park School in Dagenham. 

 

The charity’s coveted annual award celebrates the practitioner who has made a significant contribution to leading the charity’s mission of supporting children to be in school, ready to learn, whatever it takes. It’s named the Terry Farrell Practitioner of the Year Award in memory of the late inspirational co-founder of School-Home Support.

Council apprentice nominated for national award

A graduate of Barking and Dagenham Council’s apprenticeship scheme has been shortlisted for a national award.

Cintia Jankoczi, who worked as a level-3 business administrator in the Job Shop Construction Team, has made the final of the 2021 Public Services People Managers Association (PPMA) Apprentice of the Year award.

The awards identify and showcase the promising and emerging talent of people working in the public sector.

Joint work sees persistent fly-tip problem resolved

Problems with a persistent fly-tip spot which has been a blight on the lives of local residents and has been so bad that sometimes residents have had to mount the kerb to drive past, has now been resolved.

The site on Link Road, just off the A13 in Dagenham, has resulted in numerous complaints from residents.

Bed-lam in east London as mattress fly-tippers are caught and fined

There were sleepless nights recently for a pair of mattress dumping fly-tippers in Barking and Dagenham, as they were both fined following a council sting operation.

The pair received fines totalling an eye-watering £1,200, with one receiving a £400 fine and the other receiving two fines totalling £800.

Shockingly, one of the people fined owns a local furniture shop which sells mattresses, whilst the other was identified by their own tenant who lives nearby.

Last chance for homeowners in Barking and Dagenham to apply for FREE solar panels

Homeowners across Barking and Dagenham have until Tuesday 31 August to apply for up to £10,000 worth of Solar PV (Solar Photovoltaics) panel installs to their home.



The council has joined forces with E.ON and J&J Crumps to ensure eligible home owners across the borough are able to benefit from the scheme.

Trading Standards confiscate thousands of illegal cigarettes from Dagenham business

A local business in Dagenham has been caught selling illicit cigarettes after Trading Standards Officers received a tip off from a suspicious resident. 



It was certainly bad luck for the business, located on Rainham Road South, last Friday (13 August) when officers raided the premises and found 10,800 illegal cigarettes, with a street value of more than £5000. The cigarettes were in batches of 20 and totalled 540 packets.

Online ReadFest 2021: Reading and writing festival celebrates 10th anniversary with exciting free online events

Literacy lovers will be able to meet authors, hear about how to publish books, and have a chance to hone their writing skills at Barking and Dagenham’s very own book festival.

Now in its tenth year, ReadFest will take place between Monday, 6 and Friday, 24 September, and aims to deliver a selection of local, national and internationally acclaimed writers.

Thousands came together to celebrate unity and community at the Becontree Weekender festivals

After a year off due to the global pandemic, festivals came back in style to Barking and Dagenham last weekend, and over 18,000 residents came to enjoy the fun and excitement.

The Becontree Forever Weekender took place at Parsloes Park, Dagenham with the Becontree 100 Festival on Saturday 14 August, followed by the Roundhouse Music Festival on Sunday 15 August.
