What can I take to the tips?

You can still book a bulky waste collection from your home if you have unwanted items, which you need to dispose of. This service will save you the time and the hassle of having to visit the tip.

Will there be long queues?

We encourage you to wait until it’s absolutely necessary to visit the tip, to help to reduce waiting times for everyone. The busier the tip is, the longer you will have to queue to get in, and you risk being turned away if roads are blocked.

You should avoid lunchtimes which are usually the busiest time and you should try to get to Frizlands Lane tip earlier in the day.

We will try to ease traffic congestion as much as we can, and we ask you to please cooperate with our staff during this difficult time. Verbal and physical abuse towards staff will not be tolerated.

If a queue will prevent you from entering before the site's closing time, you should use an alternative site or try again another day.

Can I park near the tips?

There are currently no parking facilities near the tips, and vehicles should not stop near the sites.

Will there be any changes to parking near Frizlands Lane tip or road closures?

There are no planned road closures.

Is there a limit on how much stuff I can take to the tip?

Small vans are permitted to use the tip but larger vans (over 3.5t maximum permissible mass) will need to use Jenkins Lane. Luton Vans, flat bed vehicles, vans with tail lifts or tippers of any size are not permitted at any reuse and recycling centre.

How many times a day / week can I go to the tip?

To reduce congestion at the tips, we’re asking you to keep your visits to a minimum.

By doing this, you’ll help each household to visit the tip to dispose of their waste and reduce waiting times for everyone.

What ID will I need to use at the tips?

To use any of the centres you will need to bring either your current Council Tax bill or driving

licence with your current address. You will be asked to show your ID through your vehicle window which should remain closed to help us maintain social distancing.

Will there be social-distancing at the tips?

Yes, you should keep two metres from anyone else at all times.

We will limit the number of vehicles that can be allowed into the tips at any one time, and alternative parking bays will be closed off to help keep people at a safe distance from each other.

Only two people will be allowed to step out from each vehicle and children will not be allowed to leave vehicles.

Staff will wear personal protective equipment.

How will you make sure the tips are safe?

The safety of our residents and staff is our number one priority. We will take all necessary precautions to ensure everyone’s safety.

To stay safe at any recycling centre, remember:

  • if you need help, please ask a member of staff
  • wear strong shoes and suitable clothing
  • the speed limit is strictly 5 miles per hour
  • be careful when walking around the site, particularly when carrying things
  • ensure children and pets stay in the car when you are loading
  • wrap sharp items very carefully and wear gloves when carrying them
  • use the steps provided and do not throw things into the containers from lower levels

Do I need to book an appointment?

Bookings are now required for certain vehicles to tip waste and recycling at the Frizlands Reuse and Recycling Centre, which is provided by the East London Waste Authority (ELWA).

If you are using a van, any vehicle towing a trailer or any vehicle which has been modified to increase its carrying capacity, you will need to book a slot in advance.

For more information on van and trailer bookings please check ELWA’s website or click here to make a booking.

Without a booking, you may be refused entry. Bookings are not required for cars.

You no longer need to request authorisation to dispose of ‘restricted waste’ (waste generated from DIY/renovation activity) through LBBD as this is managed through the booking system.

Please check the ELWA website for more information and to book your visit.

Will anyone be able to help if I need support to unload my vehicle?

Staff will not be able to help unload vehicles if you are unable to carry items up steps, but you will be able to place items on the floor at designated points for staff to move later.

Please bring somebody from your household with you if you will need help unloading items from your vehicle.

We would encourage residents not to take items to the tip if you are unable to unload your vehicle, until after social-distancing measures are relaxed.

Don’t forget, you can still book a bulky waste collection from your home if you have unwanted items you need to dispose of. This service will save you the time and hassle of having to visit the tip.
