Deceased persons

If a property remains empty after the person who previously lived in it and paid Council Tax on it dies, then no Council Tax will need to be paid.  This will then change when either of the below happens:

  • the property is passed on to someone else, becomes occupied or is sold
  • it has been six months since the grant of probate or letter of administration have been made

Council Tax still needs to be paid on a property if it remains occupied by other people or if the property is jointly owned and only one owner has died.  If only one person remains in the property they they will be entitled to a 25% discount.  Please visit our Single person discount page for more information.
