Deceased persons

If the occupier dies and a property is left empty, it may be exempt from Council Tax.

If a property has been left unoccupied following the death of the person who was previously paying Council Tax, it may be exempt.

No council tax will need to be paid as long as the property remains empty after the occupier's death.

The exemption will cease either:

  • six months after the grant of probate or letters of administration have been made
  • if the property is passed to a beneficiary, becomes occupied or has been sold

The exemption does not apply where the property remains occupied by other people or is jointly owned and only one owner has passed away.

If only one person lives in the property after someone else dies, then we will transfer the Council Tax into the occupier's name and give a 25% discount.
