Barking and Dagenham marks the start of LGBT+ History Month with month of events

The council has officially launched LGBT+ History Month with the raising of the Progressive Pride flag outside Barking Town Hall on Monday 2 February.

Each February, LGBT+ History Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of LGBT+ people across society, reflect on the progress made toward equality, and recognise the challenges that remain. This year’s national theme, Science & Innovation, shines a spotlight on LGBT+ pioneers whose work continues to shape technology, healthcare, and scientific discovery.

Throughout the month, residents, staff, and community partners are invited to take part in a diverse programme of events designed to celebrate LGBT+ voices and promote inclusion. Activities include Being Visible choir sessions led by Bianca Stephens, a creative writing workshop exploring queer narratives, film‑making activities, visual storytelling workshops, cabaret performances, and a range of community sessions.

Cllr Sade Bright, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Diversity, said: “LGBT+ History Month is an important moment for us as a borough. Raising the Progressive Pride flag is a visible reminder of our commitment to equality, but it’s the stories, creativity, and resilience of our LGBT+ community that truly inspire us. This month’s programme reflects our belief that everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and celebrated. I encourage residents to get involved and show their support.”

A full programme of events and activities is running throughout February, offering many opportunities to learn, participate, and celebrate the borough’s diverse community.

Residents can explore the programme and get involved here.

The borough has made significant strides in championing LGBT+ inclusion, reflecting a long‑standing commitment to ensuring every resident feels represented and respected. LGBT+ History Month also offers an important opportunity for learning and reflection, helping us deepen our understanding of the diverse experiences that shape our community.
