South Asian Heritage Month celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of South Asian communities is now officially underway, running from 1 July to 31 July.
This year’s theme, “Unity in Diversity”, highlights the many diverse voices, journeys, and roots that make up the South Asian community, with a focus on shared histories and community cohesion.
The month was launched today with a lively community gathering outside Barking Town Hall at 12pm, where members of the community came together to enjoy light entertainment and mark the start of the celebrations.
Cllr Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community, Business & Engagement, said: “Today’s launch was a wonderful moment for our borough. South Asian Heritage Month is an important reminder of the strength we find in our shared stories and the diversity that enriches our community. This year’s theme, Unity in Diversity, captures exactly what makes Barking & Dagenham so special.”
As the month continues, residents can look forward to a varied programme of events, including an Evening Fashion Show & Shared Community Dish on Friday 17 July, a Health Talk on common illnesses in South Asian communities on Saturday 18 July, and a Storytelling & Embracing Unity in Our Differences event on Sunday 19 July, hosted by the Adanna Women’s Support Group.
The celebrations also feature a series of film screenings, each accompanied by popcorn, refreshments, and free children’s arts and crafts. Later in the month, residents can join Decolonising Through Creative Writing with Preetha Chockalingam, running online from 30 July to 20 August, and enjoy Chai & Community: Southeast Asian Heritage Drop‑In on Saturday 8 August, a relaxed afternoon of tea, cake, and conversation shaped by the people of Barking & Dagenham.
