Residents of Barking and Dagenham can now contact the council’s pest control service, as the service reopened while maintaining strict guidelines for staff and residents’ safety. 

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Public Realm, said: 

“We opened pest control bookings for all species of pests from 26 May, to support our residents to make sure their homes are pest-free, and to maintain a healthy and safe living environment. 

“However, we must ensure at the same time that we take all precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

This week is Volunteers’ Week, which takes place from 1 – 7 June and is a chance to celebrate and say thank you to the hundreds of volunteers who are giving their time in a range of capacities across Barking and Dagenham.

During the pandemic, a number of our volunteers have taken on roles to support those who are the most vulnerable in the community.

Local community group, The Hug Support Group in Barking, is celebrating after being awarded over £9k in National Lottery Community funding to support its work with parents during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

 

Residents of Barking and Dagenham are set to benefit economically, socially and environmentally from the council’s Social Value Policy.



The policy, which was agreed by the council’s Cabinet on Tuesday 19 May, will see every company or organisation that bids for council contracts worth over £100,000 required to submit clear plans for how they will help the council to achieve its goals.

Women and young girls across Barking and Dagenham who are experiencing ‘period poverty’ have been given a boost thanks to the efforts of two local councillors and ASDA stores.

Prior to the pandemic, Cllr Glenda Paddle had always been at the forefront of looking at ways to provide free sanitary products to the borough’s vulnerable women and young girls, a situation made worse during the pandemic.

As Barking and Dagenham Giving Week comes to a close, Barking and Dagenham Giving are pleased to announce that the £100,000 Covid-19 Rapid Response Fund, provided by the Lankelly Chase Foundation is now open for applications.

This fund has been designed with the help of members of the community working together virtually under lockdown, to ensure that it is available to all those making a difference during the Covid-19 crisis. It is another clear example of how the local community is made stronger by working and learning together.

Residents of Alfred Gardens in Barking have received some good news after hearing that a Closure Order served on a property, which had been a source of anti-social behaviour, has been extended for a further three months.

The Closure Order for the property at 9 Alfred Gardens was due to expire later this month but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the council has been unable to start possession proceedings and evict the tenant, in order to take back the property.

The 16th International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia was marked by Barking and Dagenham Council with a flag-raising event at Barking Town Hall.

The rainbow flag was flown over the Town Square at midday on Friday, 15 May to mark the date (17 May) in 1990 when the World Health Organisation declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder.

Residents can now sign up for Barking and Dagenham Council’s Green Garden Waste service as the service opens again for new subscribers from Monday, 18 May. 

The fortnightly service offers residents an environmentally friendly way to dispose of garden waste such as flowers and grass cuttings, weeds, leaves, and hedge trimmings. 

The council is already providing the service to 5,400 existing subscribers and is now extending it to everyone else.  

Barking and Dagenham Giving Week, which will run from Monday 18 to Sunday 24 May, is a new celebration of local people and projects that support the community during the coronavirus crisis and all year round.

The aim of the week is to highlight how powerful it is for local people to give time, skills and space for their community and to support local causes.

This first year, in light of the social distancing measures imposed in the wake of the COVID outbreak, Giving Week has gone online.
