Having a paid carer (also known as a ‘care worker’) can help if you need help with day-to-day tasks and are finding it hard to manage. This and other types of support can help you stay living independently in your own home.
Care workers are often employed by a homecare agency. Homecare agencies must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), who monitor and inspects care services. You can find a list of homecare agency inspection reports on the CQC website. Sometimes care workers are directly employed by people who need care, and in these cases are often called a ‘personal assistant’.
If you need help with day-to-day tasks and are finding it hard to manage without support, you can contact adult social care at the council for a free social care needs assessment. If you are eligible for help from adult social care, you may need to pay for part or all of your care. The amount depends on your income (how much money you have coming in each week) and your assets (your savings and investments).
