We know that most people want to stay in their own homes for as long as possible. If you or someone you know is considering moving to a care home, you may first want to think about changing the support you get at home, such as using care technology or equipment to stay safe.
There are also supported, sheltered housing and extra care housing options that suit people needing a degree of support built into their home. If you or someone you know needs a higher level of support, a care home may be a good option.
As a first step, you can contact adult social care at the council for a free social care needs assessment to discuss your needs and what support might be helpful.
Care homes have trained staff on-site 24 hours a day. You normally have your own room, in safe and comfortable environment. Meals and activities are provided, and staff will support you with the daily tasks you need help with.
A residential care home and a nursing care home are slightly different. The main difference is that a nursing home always has a qualified nurse on-site to provide medical care.
If you move into a care home, you will normally have to pay towards the cost of this. The amount depends on your income (how much money you have coming in each week) and your assets (your savings, investments and the value of any property you own).

All care homes must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), who monitor and inspect care services. You can find a list of care homes and inspection reports on the CQC website.
You can discuss care home options as part of your social care needs assessment or by talking to your social worker (if you have one).
