A Direct Debit is an instruction from you to your bank or building society authorising us to collect your instalments.
Direct Debit is the best way to pay your Council Tax bill because it ensures that it is paid automatically.
There are many benefits to paying by Direct Debit:
A choice of payment dates
If you pay by Direct Debit you can have a choice of 4 payment dates: 1st, 8th, 15th or 22nd unlike other methods which are restricted to the 1st of the month only.

Direct Debit payments come with a guarantee so you're automatically protected by three important safeguards:
- An immediate money back guarantee from your bank in the event of an error in the payment of your Direct Debit
- Advance notice if the date or amount changes
- The right to cancel at any time

Set up a Direct Debit
It is easy to set up a Direct Debit online by registering to use our online service, My Account. You can also check your balance and make changes to your account.

The Direct Debit Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits.
If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit London Borough of Barking and Dagenham will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed.
If you request London Borough of Barking and Dagenham to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request.
If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit by London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, your bank or building society you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society.
If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when London Borough of Barking and Dagenham asks you to.
You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting either us or your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required.
